Spine width is not a fixed property of your manuscript.

It comes from the final typeset interior, the chosen paper and the production specification of your printer. The cover should therefore be finalised only after an up-to-date page count exists.

The underlying principle

For many duplex-printed books, spine width can be estimated as sheet count × paper thickness. Sheet count is usually page count ÷ 2. This remains an estimate: binding, materials and manufacturing can change the production value.

The current cover template or calculator supplied by your chosen printer for that exact format, stock and binding is always authoritative. Never send a generic online estimate to production without verification.

Move from interior PDF to correct cover

Do not calculate the spine from the page count shown in Word. Only the typeset print PDF gives the relevant extent.

Choose trim size and printer

Format, stock and binding form one configuration. A 5.5 × 8.5 inch paperback can receive different cover dimensions from two providers if paper or manufacturing differs.

Generate the current interior

Fonts, margins, leading, chapter openings and images all affect page count. Generate the complete print PDF including front matter and final pages.

Relate pages to sheets

With duplex printing, two pages normally share one sheet. For a simple estimate, divide page count by two and multiply it by the paper thickness per sheet.

Use a provider value, not an assumption

Paper weight in gsm is not the same as physical thickness in millimetres. Use the printer's spine factor, caliper or official cover calculator.

Derive the complete cover from the template

A full cover includes back, spine and front plus the printer's bleed and safe areas. Spine width alone is not a complete cover dimension.

Recheck after every extent change

A change to leading or additional front matter can alter page count. Regenerate interior and cover as one state, then use the printer's preview or order a proof.
